Challenges

  1. Obstacle: Due to the limited network in Loughborough, it was difficult to find participants within my inclusion/exclusion criteria (Asian International students, Male, First time living in the UK).

Solution: Asked acquaintances to refer me to individuals with a matching profile

  2. Obstacle: The process of selecting and testing appropriate design research methods during a short time frame.

Solution: Where possible I tried to arrange pilot tests with other candidates to identify any shortcomings in my interview protocols.

Goals

  1. Conduct 3 contextual interviews with different participants fitting the predetermined exclusion/inclusion criteria based on research objectives and secondary research

  2. Explore the sample group's (jeans) laundry attitudes, behaviours and routines through semi-structured interviews and design ethnography to understand the sustainability impacts and identify design opportunities which could address these impacts and enhance the user experience

  3. Conduct a visual report with suggested and prioritised design opportunities

Reflection

  • When selecting the sample group for this study, I wanted to challenge myself by choosing a different persona profile from my own in terms of culture, gender, and nationality. The ideal scenario would have been to only recruit participants that I don't have a personal contact with, outside of this module as that would have better emulated a real-life scenario. However, due to time constraints, I had to go with convenience and availability sampling

  • When selecting the methods, I wanted to balance the amount of newness with the level of familiarity based on the time I had, which was challenging. One part of me wanted to implement every new method or technique I came across due to curiosity, but another side of me knew that this project was not about quantity but rather being able to produce high-quality research.
